The Scotts

For Penny Scott, home is more than just a place to live – it’s a sanctuary she fought hard to find. After moving 33 times throughout her life, she had finally discovered the house where she wanted to put down permanent roots. However, when she was diagnosed with blood cancer, the two-story home she loved so dearly presented an unexpected challenge: its stairs began to feel like a daily mountain to climb.

“Before the lift, I had to carefully think about every trip upstairs,” Penny explains. “By 11 AM, I would be completely exhausted just from navigating the stairs a few times.” Her husband Andy found himself increasingly worried whenever he needed to leave the house, knowing how much Penny struggled with this simple but essential aspect of daily life, particularly during her transfusion cycles when her energy levels would hit their lowest point.

The impact of this daily challenge extended far beyond mere physical exhaustion. Penny, who treasures her independence, found herself increasingly frustrated at having to ask Andy for help with basic tasks. The stairs weren’t just a physical barrier; they were beginning to affect the couple’s relationship and their vision of their future in the home they loved.

After careful consideration and research, the Scotts began exploring various mobility solutions. They investigated traditional options like stairlifts but found them impractical due to their narrow staircase. Over the course of a year, they researched several providers, however, it was Uplifts that captured their attention, offering what Andy describes as “the perfect combination of features from all the others, but better.”

The transformation since installing their Uplifts homelift has been remarkable.

It’s an absolute gamechanger for my wife,” Andy shares with evident relief. “Now she can move between floors without depleting her precious energy, saving it for the things she actually wants to do, like cooking.

During particularly challenging periods in her treatment cycle, Penny can independently access their bedroom to rest when needed, without having to wait for assistance.

The installation has brought unexpected benefits to their relationship as well. “There’s a much greater sense of calm in our home now,” Penny notes with a smile. “Andy has complete peace of mind when he’s out, and I feel less frustrated since I don’t have to ask for help with every little thing.” The lift has seamlessly integrated into their home’s architecture, becoming a multipurpose solution that serves them in ways they hadn’t anticipated – from carrying heavy shopping bags to transporting suitcases.

The practical benefits extend beyond daily convenience. The lift has become an integral part of their home’s functionality without compromising its character. “It doesn’t feel cramped at all,” Penny emphasises. “It fits in perfectly, as if it was always meant to be here.” This seamless integration has been so successful that the Scotts now find themselves becoming inadvertent advocates for home adaptation, often inviting others to see their installation.

Perhaps most significantly, the homelift has provided the Scotts with invaluable peace of mind about their future. “We can stay here until the end,” Penny says with evident relief. “It’s emotionally calming to know we’ve future-proofed our home. We don’t need to worry about moving or making major changes later – everything we need is already in place.”

Their advice to others considering a home lift is both emphatic and practical: “Don’t wait until you absolutely need it,” they urge. “With something as valuable as this, you’ll find yourself at the back of the queue if you wait too long. It doesn’t make you any less able – instead, it enables you to live life fully and on your own terms.”

The Scotts have become passionate advocates for proactive home adaptation. “Some people can be slightly arrogant about not getting them,” Penny reflects, “but this is about enlightenment to what you can do in your own home. More people can afford this than they might think, and they should seriously consider it before it becomes a necessity.”

The impact on their daily life has been profound. “Everything has become more seamless,” Andy notes. “There’s a huge sense of relief and reassurance in seeing Penny move around without any restraint. It’s wonderful to watch her maintain her independence.” The lift has transformed their house into a truly welcoming and practical space, one that supports rather than hinders their lifestyle.

“It’s not just about mobility, it’s about maintaining dignity, independence, and the freedom to enjoy our home fully. The lift hasn’t just helped us stay in our house – it’s helped us continue living our life the way we want to.
